When you think of Hollywood, what sticks in your mind the most? The glitz, the glamour, or the endless cash that fuels the lifestyles of the rich and famous? Maybe it’s all these things and more, but for Takahiro, he thinks of nothing but disappointment as his father has married Hollywood actress Elizabeth Adley who he has fallen head over heels in love with – and moved to Japan to be closer to her. He on the other hand has to leave as he wants him to move too – a new hotel room awaits him, but not everything in tinsel town is wonderful – something evil lurks.
Some men lead normal lives, while others lead double ones. In Ryuuichi’s case, he leads a double life; by day he’s a famous magician, while after hours, he acts as a detective chasing clues and leads to special cases, and sometimes murders. As he is the consummate showman, he directs everything he does with flair and elan as if he was still the magician. As in a great deal of shojo manga, the male character is as handsome as the women, and Ryuuichi has beauty in abundance in this with his short, feminine hairstyle, striking eyes and full sensuous lips, he is the perfect protagonist. To be honest, he might remind readers of a sexier version of Gin Ichimaru from Bleach. He is questioned for his use of lipstick in the manga, but anyone can imagine that the girls like a bit of femininity in their men.

Since time immemorial, the land of Arcadia has been plagued by monsters called the Thanatos. Only Purifiers, rare individuals born with the ability to destroy the Thanatos and heal those they’ve harmed, can stop them. But now, a young medical student named Angelique is about to turn things on their head. She is Arcadia’s first female Purifier and may even be the prophesied Queen’s Egg who will save it. Together with her friends, Angelique must defend Arcadia from threats both monstrous and human and find her destiny.
It’s a dark and dramatic new supernatural series about a girl exorcist haunted by a traumatizing past and her friendship with her two Jiu Jiu – supernatural creatures bonded to her to help take down the big bad demons. Takmichi was born into a family of hunters, those people with the supernatural gift to see and slay demons. A long time ago though, her brother was killed protecting her and it forever scarred her. She refuses to show feelings and instead will not get close to anyone for fear of feeling that pain again or worse – someone else getting killed to save her. So she thinks if she makes sure no one likes her, then no one will ever be put in danger trying to save her. It would almost work except for her two shape-shifting familiars’ Night and Snow. They can turn into wolves or handsome young men and they are devoted to her, whether she likes it or not!
A heat wave hits and it is having an unusual effect on Night and Snow. Takamichi kicks them out of her bed only to regret it later. It turns out she’s getting far more attached to her familiars than she was willing to let on. The theme of loneliness keeps up in this issue as well as the theme of bonds.
Time to usher in the heat with one last Special Release coming at you this week on Anime Network Online: Leviathan ~The Last Defense~ is our fashionably late final entry to our Summer Release cache, and definitely something you’ll want to watch as you gear up for fun in the sun this June.
