Gruesome murders continue to plague the district, leaving Twilights like Nic as possible suspects. However, interest gets diverted when a Twilight is hired to take out Monroe, which would lead to an all out war and the possible manhunt of all Twilights. Quickly dirty cops, rival mobs, and two Handymen are on the scene with only Nic and Worick the most likely two and unlikely heroes that can stop all out mafia wars from tearing the districts apart.
This volume gives more clues to Nic and Worick’s past. There is also a great deal more learned about Twilights; the drug addiction, the short lifespan, and the Guild where we meet scary Gina, the head of the Guild and not one not to be messed with under any circumstances. Of course all this leads to more questions, like who is behind setting up the Twilights and wanting to bring about full on war with the mafia? Meanwhile back at their pad, Alex is not as recovered as she seems which leads to a shocking and heartbreaking altercation between her and Worick.
One of the mysteries that most ensnares me is the one regarding Veronica. We see her only in glimpses and usually through Nic’s memories. Warnings abound about how Alex should leave lest she end up like Veronica seep into the story. The mystery of Veronica remains for now, but the foreshadowing is ominous.
A gripping and gritty crime series!
