Sakura and Aoba are to part ways – forever. She has agreed to live at his uncle’s estate, even marry the man for the sake of others, but she truly yearns for Aoba and he for her. Love tries to find a way, but will it be enough when an immortal loves a mere mortal human man?
Interesting insights are given in the volume first off about Sakura. She’s immortal. What that means is that unless she falls in love with another immortal, the man she loves she will be doomed to watch die over time as she never ages. Aoba realizes it is not her person as much as her heart that he needs to protect, but is he man enough for the job?
At least one person does not think so. The demon Enju is back and he’s back for Sakura. He spirits her away and tells her the truth. She thought she knew what had happened to her beloved older brother Kai five years ago, but Enju enlightens her. He spins the tale of an unending nightmare and at the hands of those she has sworn to protect. Enju hates all humans to the point of madness. Aoba intervenes but it may not be enough. Others come and they claim to be from the moon kingdom as well!
The sudden introduction of the moon people raises many questions as does the tale of Enju about Kai. It could be that the humans are the villains in this story or perhaps there are simply many tragic people and flawed characters to this captivating fantasy tale. The volume ends with Sakura being taken away to the moon kingdom, willing or not.
