The latest in the alternate world of the Shinji Ikari Raising Project focuses more on Rei and her feelings for Shinji as well as some fun in the water.
Bento boxes become a big rage and Rei wants to make one for Shinji. His mother helps Rei out but getting it to him with Asuka not around is another story. The other girl is all over him constantly, riding him about one thing or another. The shy Rei keeps trying only to be thwarted at every turn. It’s a heartwarming moment when she at last gives it to Shinji and readers see his reaction.
The endearing Rei story continues when her scores fall and Misato comes up with a mischievous way to help raise them. She uses Shinji in the test and it leads to some close and blushing moments for Rei.
There’s some fun with a sports festival which was too brief considering all the fun they could have had with the concept. From there, the latest volume becomes a lot of fan service as the girls first go to a water park and then later to a hot spring inn (with Shinji included of course).
The manga includes fan letters and art, 4 full color pages at the beginning of the manga, and a special preview of the upcoming new Evangelion manga: Neon Genesis Evangelion Campus Apocalypse. It looks very different from the Shinji Ikari project and immediately impresses with its edgy atmosphere and striking new looks to the familiar characters.
Rei gets some time with Shinji, and the girls hit first the pool and then the hot springs in this fan loaded volume of the Shinji Ikari Raising Project. It’s an enjoyably lighter, alternative world to the classic Evangelion fans know.
