REVIEW:
Mylene is 009-1. She has a license to kill and a way of seduction that no man, ally or enemy, can resist! She’s the top of the spy biz in a cold war that just got hot thanks to her! She might come off cold, because she’ll kill an enemy agent after sleeping with him without a pause, but she has a streak of compassion that gets her into trouble. But trouble is her middle name! Whether she deals with a sniper, a deadly cat and mouse game with an Eastern block assassin, or an invitation to compete in a do or die trap at a castle with a bunch of other spies, Mylene never turns down a job.  But not every job is a success. And some jobs break her heart, the one she tries to hide from the world. There’s a jazz band and walking time bomb that brings her to tears, a mutant girl targeted for assassination, a good man bent on a bad road of revenge, and an old mentor turned traitor that Mylene has to put down.

For all the fan service (and there is plenty!) this is a no-nonsense spy thriller. She may be all luscious curves but she does a dangerous job and she takes that job seriously. One of the highlights of the show is when her origins are revealed and it comes full circle for the finale of the series when she has to go to the moon to stop the abuse and use of mutant children as weapons of mass destruction. It brings her face to face with an old acquaintance and a family reunion that will break her heart even as she saves the world. The woman has backbone and a hard ethical core that no one can crack, no matter what the person means to her. She always puts the welfare of the world first no matter what it costs her soul.

Alice Fulks does a fantastic job voicing the lethal lady. Her most famous work before Mylene was likely as the Countess in Gilgamesh. She was a brilliant casting choice for the complex character of Mylene. The show has a cool opening “Destiny Girl” that has an amazing electric guitar that carries the tune.

The animation is done by Aniplex, famous for Rurouni Kenshin, Fullmetal Alchemist, D. Gray Man, Bleach, Vampire Knight, FLAG, Read or Die (both TV and OVA), and Naruto. It does a great job of staying true to famous Shotaro Ishinomori’s original manga while updating the look to make it sleek. The action sequences are fabulous. It definitely carries its share of mature content but does so with cloak and dagger style.

IN SUMMARY:
