In a marvelously imaginative stand alone manga, The Way to Heaven introduces readers to a fantasy story about second chances, even after death.
Former boxer Moriya and former yakuza Watase have never met – that is until the day they died together in an accident at an overpass. That one fateful moment threw them into a strange place where they must do what they can to earn a second chance at life…and at love.
A beautiful yet mischievous alien woman saved their souls. She has given them the opportunity to earn a second chance at life. But there’s a price. They must agree to be her lab experiment and to go and do whatever she says. Both agree and suddenly find themselves transformed. Watase is a vampire while Moriya is a werewolf. They must get as much blood and semen as possible in order to earn their seconds at a new life. The time of degradation and limbo like existence brings the two suffering men closer together. But time is a funny thing and the alien has played a nasty trick on them. They are not in the present but the past, a past that might give at least one of them a second chance to save the man he loved. But if Moriya helps Watase save his old Yakuza friend, it could cement Moriya never getting to know the reformed Watase in real life, therefore tearing the man he is falling in love with forever out of his reach.
Things only get more complicated when Moriya meets the past Watase before he reformed. This hard Yakuza criminal is nothing like the man Moriya has grown to love. If he helps save Watase’s friend, whose loss is the very guilt that led Watase to change has ways and become the gentler man Moriya loves, will Moriya lose all opportunity and hope of recalling that man in their future? That is the troubling question he must wrestle with and time is running out.
This innovative tale is a well done and unique romance that shows imagination and great storytelling. The art style is as alluring as the immersing story. Handsome men, dangerous situations, even more dangerous seductions all frame the difficult choice these two men have to make.
A love that defies time and the imagination makes for a compelling read in the imaginative Way to Heaven.
