The Beatles tune “Can’t Buy Me Love” went through my head the entire time I read this new shojo manga series. It’s funny, it’s kooky, and it’s one of the funnier romantic comedies I’ve read so far in 2008.
Ryoko is a nutcase. She’s sort of your average high school girl, with some questionable taste in guys (she likes the odd ones), and rollercoaster mood swings! She swoons over Ryu (short for Ryunosuke). He seems studious, quiet, wears glasses, and has tussled hair. A serious and sincere guy. Or so she thinks. Then she finds out he works at a Host Club. He’s a guy for hire! And the girls like to hire him a lot. It destroys her image of him (that’s when you get to see her mega mood swings). Now she won’t even look at him. But she’s managed to catch his eye! He toys with her thinking she’s funny and he can’t stay away from her. It drives her right up the wall. Then when she declares she would absolutely never ever date someone like him let alone love him, Ryu comes back with his own declaration: he absolutely will make her love him! And so the war of love begins!
The manga is fun and sassy and so is the artwork. It has all kinds of wind swept looks for Ryu, and showing off Ryoko as the sweet and pretty girl next door type. That is until she has a freak out. And she has a lot of those. She switches her moods on a dime faster than a roller coaster! She is so funny! Her mood changes are like watching a game of ping pong! She definitely amuses Ryu to no end, to the point where he simply can’t leave her alone. And he’s not the bad guy she thinks he might be. When she gets involved with a seemingly perfect ideal of a classmate, Ryu smells something bad and it isn’t the socks! This guy is up to no good and Ryu might be her knight in dented armor after all.
A fun and sassy new romantic comedy! Girl likes boy, boy is for hire, girl runs, he chases, and the war of romance begins!
