SYNOPSIS:
Sven is your run-of-the-mill sweeper (a.k.a. bounty hunter) – down on his luck, haunted by the perpetual grumbling of his stomach and looking to make enough cash just to get by. When a damsel in distress enlists his aid, Sven crosses paths with the worst possible luck – Black Cat (a.k.a. Train Heartnet). At odds now with the branded assassin, Sven seeks to save a young girl before the unlucky Number can carry out his mission.

“I’ve come to deliver some bad luck.”

But fate has brought these three together for a reason, as Sven adopts two stray pupils – The former Chronos Eraser Train and the young bio-weapon Eve. As these newfound companions seek out a new way of life, the past proves unwilling to let them go free. Sought by both the Chronos Numbers and the Taoist revolutionary group risen against them, the Apostles of the Star, their happy ending will require more than just luck…

The complete 24 episode TV series on 6 DVDS.

REVIEW:
A hard core killer with heart of gold, that’s our Train Heartnet. The dude comes off cold at the start but with a psycho like Creed killing you’re favourite girl, damn right you’re going to go after him with guns blazing! But there’s that pesky little promise Train made about not taking another human life. Creed wants Train the killer back, but this Black Cat plans to beat the odds with his own brand of luck!

Black Cat is an anime full of assassins, secret organizations, uber cool powers, and heart stopping moments. The anime does a great job of staying true to the hit manga by Kentaro Yabuki that it’s based on. It covers how Train first meets Sweeper Sven and how they hook up with Eve right on time to get hit by Creed and his crazy psycho group the Apostles of the Stars. Train not only has Creed and his merry psycho band after him. His old gang, the scary mafia-like organization with assassins called the Chronos Numbers want Train the Black Cat back under their thumb. But he wants to be a Sweeper righting wrongs and not taking lives. He wants reform, maybe even redemption. And this Black Cat will be bad luck for anyone who gets in his way!

The show has tons of action. There’s the different bounty hunter gigs Train and his trio get. There’s their run ins with the Chronos Numbers, a cutey and wiley thief named Rinslet, and then things heat up big time when the Apostles make their play. It all ends up into two huge confrontations over the course of the anime. Rinslet gets abducted and Creed is waiting for the Cat to return to him for their big moment. They have it, but the bigger moment has to wait until the last volume when the Chronos Numbers, Train, Sven and a bunch of Sweepers come together to bring down Creed and the Apostles before they destroy the world. The action is awesome with emphasis on the awe. It has some of the best adrenalin packed action scenes in anime.

With all the action, there’s a lot of heart tugging too. Find out why Train wants to kill Creed but a promise prevents him. The story of Train and Saya makes me blubber like a little boy every time. And the stuff that happened in Train’s childhood is just plain harsh. But then again, guess you can’t really grow up to be one of the world’s best assassins if you didn’t have trauma and gun play happen at a young age. Man, these anime characters have it rough!

The animation is freakin-a-ma-zing! It is hot action, fantastic character designs, and wickedly cool throughout. Gonzo does it so it’s no big surprise that it’s done so well or so super cool. Those Gonzo guys better watch out, they’ll raise that animation bar too high! The anime on top of the amazing jaw-dropping animation has one of the best opening theme songs and animation sequences I’ve ever seen. I actually had it on repeat to watch over a few times. I never skipped over the opening, not once in all 24 episodes. It’s called “Daia no Hana” composed, lyrics and sung by Yoriko.

EXTRAS:
Extra goodies include clean opening and ending animation, and FUNimation trailers. The set comes in an extra spiffy shiny silver art box. The inside folds out with a splash image of everyone, and I mean everyone, there’s Train, Eve, Sven, Rinslet, a bunch of the Chronos Numbers and even Creed and his Apostles. Great imagery. The set also has a 24-page color booklet that has “Sweeper’s Press” with character bios, special columns, key terms and more!

IN SUMMARY:
It’s an anime prowling with stunning action! Rogue assassins, obsessed killers, action doesn’t get better than this intense series!
