Transmissions are interfered with as a beam of light appears from the earth and rises into the sky, becoming a doorway where dual beasts arrive, one red and one white who battle to the death, finally destroying themselves. These creatures leave the pillar of darkness where it originally stood.
Ai and Yu, the children of the Scientists who saw the beam twelve years ago are in search of their lost parents. Wondering along the subway they lurch back as a train hones into view exuding a great darkness. Curious, they board it even though they are at first afraid.
They meet Lisa on their way to Wonderland, where their parents visited at the time of the conjunction.
When they reach their destination, they see how strange a place Wonderland really is – peculiar creations, buildings that could not exist in reality, and curious characters like Kaze who has forgotten who he really is, but not his purpose – armed with a powerful Magun, he wants to confront his sworn enemy, Makenshi, but he is there to help them defeat other enemies along the way.
Makenshi is part of the race who have a ruler called Earl Tyrant who also controls Crux and the Four Guardian Lords, Fungus, Herba, Oshca and Pist.
Much more is learned of Kaze and his trustee Magun. Once he helps them kill a beast, he is about to leave. Will he listen to their pleas for further help, or will he just wonder in search of Makenshi?
It is interesting to see how well thought out this series has been. The characters have been created with care and consideration for the ones out there who have followed the Final Fantasy genre from the start.
Kaze will be a character easily identified with as he is tough, mysterious and gives the impression of brooding intensity. His Magun is superb as is the way he activates it using the three bullets of mother black, fire red and burning gold to destroy his foes.
More is found out about Ai and Yu's parents and what happened the time when they went off to Wonderland – this is essential for the plot as much as the rest of the characters.
Those who have been into the video games and movies of Final Fantasy will warm to these new characters that are introduced in this first volume as more will be debuting in future volumes.
Children and adults alike will enjoy this series.
Phase 1 is packed with features including, voice actor commentaries, production sketches, key animation backgrounds, preliminary FF: U illustrations and a beautiful reversible cover.
Superb, continues the genre perfectly – one for the fans!
