On a Sunday fifteen years ago, God abandoned the world. Since then no children have been born and those who die become the Deceased, behaving as if they’re still alive while their bodies and mental faculties slowly wither away. Only the Gravekeepers, beings sent to Earth to help the dead finally rest in peace, can allow a person to truly die.
12-year-old Ai is daughter of a Gravekeeper and a man she’s never met named Hampnie Hambart. After her mother’s death she assumed the mantle of village Gravekeeper and has spent her days digging graves for everyone in the village. On the day she finally finishes she goes back to find everyone murdered by a mysterious man who claims to be none other than Hampnie Hambart, her long-lost father.
Shaken by what Hambart has to say about her village, the world, and God Himself, Ai is joined by Hambart’s old friend Yuri and the Gravekeeper Scar on a journey to see the world, learn the truth about what’s really going on, and help as many people as she can.
